00Z vs 12Z: What Shifted
The 00Z run made three meaningful changes and left the European picture essentially intact.
The standout revision is Sao Paulo. The 00Z pushed August 3-5 daily maximum temperatures 3.0 to 4.0°C warmer than the 12Z, with August 4 now landing at 25.6°C and August 5 at 25.8°C. For Brazilian midwinter, that is a large single-run adjustment. It signals reduced cloud cover and precipitation in the São Paulo basin over the early-August window, a pattern consistent with the El Niño drying signal that the seasonal guidance has been projecting. One run does not make a trend, but the direction is notable.
Houston saw a tactical trim. The 00Z pulled back July 13-16 maximum temperatures by 2.6 to 3.6°C, day 9 is now 31.8°C and day 10 is 32.8°C rather than the mid-to-upper 35°C territory the prior run was showing. The 15-day CDD total for Houston still stands at 208.4, ranking among the highest in the current dataset outside Phoenix. The near-term cooling is real but changes the week rather than the season.
Australia's wind fields took a broad downward revision. Adelaide and Melbourne late-July peak gusts were cut 3.3 to 4.3 km/h across multiple days in the July 25-27 window, and Melbourne's August 11 peak was trimmed 3.4 km/h. These are meteorologically minor but matter for Australian wind generation forecasting over weeks four through six.
Run-to-Run Momentum
The Houston cooling is now confirmed across two consecutive model cycles, both the 00Z ECMWF IFS and the EC46 revision from overnight are pointing in the same direction. This is not a single-run spike; it represents genuine model convergence on a short-term trough intrusion into the south-central US during the July 13-16 window. The medium-term picture, weeks three through six sitting at 29.6 to 30.1°C in Houston across the EC46 ensemble, has not shifted. The models are converging on a brief respite, not a pattern change.
For northwest Europe, the 00Z is running hot and getting more confident. London day 5 sits at 100 percent probability of exceeding 1.5 standard deviations above normal, that is a rare expression of near-term ensemble agreement. Paris shows the same result for day 5. Frankfurt is more moderate at 32 percent above 1.5 standard deviations, but the 80 percent warm-bias signal is clear. The 00Z ECMWF IFS 10-day mean for Amsterdam is 18.2°C, Frankfurt 20.6°C, London 21.3°C, Paris 25.9°C, all consistent with last evening's 12Z output. There is no run-to-run divergence in the European near-term picture; the runs are converging on the warm solution with progressively tighter ensemble spread through day 5.
The week 2 European question is where momentum is less clear. London's week 2 EC46 mean drops to 19.4°C from week 1's 22.1°C, and the ensemble spread opens to 18.5-25.2°C. Paris holds better at 26.7°C in week 2. The models are not diverging dramatically run-on-run for Europe week 2, but the week 1 to week 2 step-down in London is consistent across recent cycles, it is not a new signal from the 00Z.
The Sao Paulo warming is a first-run signal. It needs confirmation on the 12Z run before it can be called directional. The EC46 weekly data shows Sao Paulo's weeks three through five at 17.6-17.8°C, with wide spread (13-21°C). The August max-temperature revision sits within that envelope but represents a meaningful intra-week composition shift.
Bottom Line
The 00Z does not change the European trading picture from the 12Z briefing. Near-term warmth in northwest Europe is carrying the highest ensemble confidence of the current cycle, London and Paris day-5 probabilities at 100 percent above 1.5 standard deviations are not numbers that typically reverse the following run. European power-sector gas burn will remain suppressed by wind and solar in the near term, but the heat load is real and not abating before week two.
The Houston trim is tactical. US power burn stays supported beyond week two regardless of the short-term dip. The week three to six EC46 consensus at 29-31°C holds.
Watch for confirmation of the Sao Paulo warming on the 12Z cycle. If the revision persists, it brings forward the El Niño dry-season onset signal in Brazil and tightens the bearish hydro outlook for southeast Brazilian reservoirs heading into August, a supply-side factor for LNG buyers watching the Atlantic arb.
