Headline & Key Change The ECMWF 12Z run strengthens the week-2 warm signal for western Europe materially, with Paris emerging as the highest-confidence warm outlier in the ensemble and Amsterdam's day-10 peak revised upward by 3.4C to 29.5C, one of the sharpest single-run adjustments in the European near-term outlook. A developing tropical signal in the western Pacific is the secondary headline: Shanghai wind speeds for July 10-12 have been raised 8.5 to 11.3 km/h in this run, consistent with a disturbance tracking toward the East China coast. 2. Synoptic Setup & Forecast Evolution NW Europe sits under a mild ridge as of this run, with temperatures 2-3C above seasonal norms across the UK and France. Amsterdam is reading 18-19C with moderate southwesterly winds in the 16-20 km/h range, enough for meaningful North Sea wind generation but short of the conditions that push offshore capacity factors above 35%. London holds above 20C with sustained wind at 17-21 km/h. The setup is comfortable, neither hot enough to drive significant cooling demand nor cold enough to matter for heating. The critical transition comes mid-week. The ensemble shows a trough developing to the northwest of the British Isles around July 7-8, tracking southeast and delivering a 3-4C temperature setback to the Low Countries and Germany. Frankfurt at 19.4C on Wednesday and 19.1C Thursday, down from 23-23.4C on Monday and Tuesday, reflects this passage cleanly. The ensemble assigns a 50% probability of Frankfurt exceeding a minus-one standard deviation cold anomaly at day 5, with a 22% chance of exceeding minus-one-and-a-half standard deviations. This is not a deep cold intrusion; it is a typical Atlantic trough passage that also delivers the week's best wind pulse, with Amsterdam peaking at 21 km/h on July 7. What happens after that trough is where the forecast branches materially. The warm outcome, holding the majority of ensemble members, sees a downstream ridge amplifying over western Europe from day 8 onward, drawing continental air northward and driving Paris above 27C in week 2, Frankfurt to 22-23C, and Amsterdam challenging 29.5C around July 10. The ECMWF ensemble now assigns 88% probability of Paris exceeding a plus-one standard deviation warm anomaly at day 10 (up from mid-70s in yesterday's run), with 80% probability of exceeding plus-one-and-a-half standard deviations. London stands at 85% for plus-one standard deviation, and 61% for plus-one-and-a-half. These are high-confidence warm tail signals for the mid-July period. The cooler alternative, held by roughly 15-20% of ensemble members, keeps the trough tracking more southeastward, delaying the ridge build and holding NW Europe in a more westerly, disturbed pattern through the period. In that scenario, Paris stays closer to 23-24C and Amsterdam remains well below 25C, with more active Atlantic weather and elevated wind generation. The divergence point is the interaction between the Atlantic trough and the Scandinavian high: faster Scandinavian high retrograde builds the downstream ridge quickly; if the high holds its position, the trough cuts through more cleanly before the warm-up. The mid-week trough passage around July 7 is the most event-like feature in the near term: a brief temperature setback, elevated winds over the North Sea, and some light rainfall in the Low Countries before the ridge rebuilds. Nordic hydro availability and NW European power prices are more tightly linked through this bottleneck than the headline storage figures suggest. EU gas storage at 49.2% EU-wide and just 42% in Germany and 26% in the Netherlands is below what the injection season would ideally support at this juncture. The week-2 warm scenario, anticyclonic, suppressed winds, rising cooling demand, reduces the net injection rate: gas-fired power backs in to serve cooling load while wind output falls. The week-2 cool/westerly alternative is more injection-friendly: North Sea and offshore German wind runs above 40% capacity factor, displacing gas burn and freeing withdrawal-equivalent capacity for net injection. The ensemble favors the warm outcome, which is the less favorable injection scenario. Southern & Eastern Europe The Mediterranean is warm but not anomalously so. Rome's day-4 wind peak has been revised 4.7 km/h lower in this run, consistent with lighter conditions under the broad ridge. The EC46 extended data for Madrid shows week-1 at 30.4C with sustained warmth through all six forecast weeks, Iberian heat is structural through the summer with only modest variability (week 2: 27.8-32.7C). This is not an acute heat event; it is chronic summer anticyclonic warmth maintaining air conditioning load and sustaining solar irradiance across the region's large photovoltaic fleet, which displaces gas burn during daylight hours. Italy's storage at 67.5% is running well ahead of Germany and the Netherlands, providing that country relative flexibility. Eastern Europe data is sparse in this run, the CPC outlooks and ECMWF ensemble suggest above-normal temperatures extend across most of the continent, with the week-2 trough's southern versus northern track being the key uncertainty for whether central-eastern Europe sees meaningful cooling. East Asia The standout development from this run is the sharp upward revision in Shanghai wind speeds for July 10-12: peak wind maxima have been raised by 8.5, 11.3, and 4.8 km/h over those three days, reaching 28.8, 39.8, and 35.0 km/h respectively. The magnitude and timing of this revision is consistent with a developing tropical disturbance in the Philippine Sea or western Pacific that the model has resolved more explicitly in this cycle, the July 10-12 window would represent near-peak influence on the East China coast or landfall vicinity. This is a preliminary model signal, not a confirmed tropical advisory. But the scale of the adjustment across three consecutive forecast days warrants monitoring in the next two to three runs. Away from the tropical risk, East Asian temperatures are firm. Tokyo at week-1 24.8C and week-2 28.0C [24.4-30.8] reflects typical early July conditions, with the week-2 range extending to 30.8C at the warm end, a heat dome setup into mid-July is plausible. Seoul and Osaka run similar patterns at 25-27C. The 15-day CDD accumulation for Tokyo at 72.8 is the highest in the dataset, reflecting sustained LNG demand for power generation as the Japanese summer cooling season reaches its core. The El Niño background, discussed in section 4, historically extends the above-normal summer temperature signal across Japan and Korea into August and September, supporting elevated LNG demand through the season rather than a mid-summer peak. Americas New York is the most immediate story. The city is ending a significant heat event, 34.3C on July 3 and 31.9C on July 4, as a fast-moving frontal system undercuts the eastern ridge. Yesterday's run had Tuesday at 22.9C; this run places it at 19.7C, a further 3.2C revision downward. The cold air advection behind the front is deeper and faster than previously modelled. PJM and New England see the cooling demand peak over Independence Day, then a rapid collapse Monday through Tuesday. The broader US pattern is transitioning. NOAA's models show the 500hPa ridge retrogressing from the eastern CONUS toward a Four Corners position by week 2, which is the classic mid-July configuration. NOAA describes 500hPa heights reaching 598 dm over Colorado by July 14, described as "quite strong for an ensemble mean at that time range." This concentrates heat in the Desert Southwest and Southern Plains while the Northeast and Midwest shift toward near-normal. Houston's EC46 week-2 average of 29.9C with only modest spread (28.5-31.2C) confirms that Texas cooling load is structural through the full six-week outlook. ERCOT's summer demand trajectory remains the baseline. The Four Corners ridge position also favours enhanced monsoon moisture transport into Arizona and New Mexico. South America: Sao Paulo's July 4 temperature has been revised 3.7C warmer to 22.6C in this run, mild for Southern Hemisphere winter and consistent with below-average cold air incursions into subtropical South America. Brazil's dry season for the southeast is progressing, and hydro reservoir inflows depend primarily on precipitation in the center-north, which is remote from this temperature signal. Australia Sydney averages 11.9C with 53.7 HDD over 15 days, a normal SE Australian winter pattern. Wind forecasts for the New South Wales and Victoria region have been revised lower in this run: Sydney's July 6-8 peaks are down 5.1 and 6.1 km/h, indicating quieter conditions for the NEM wind fleet in that window. Melbourne shows a modest wind increase at the outer range (August 5 peak +4.3 km/h), too distant for near-term trading purposes. The NEM pattern for the immediate outlook is subdued westerlies with typical winter demand across the southeast, no acute weather risk in either direction. 4. Extended Range & Regime (Weeks 3-6) The background state is shaped by three overlapping drivers. ENSO has transitioned into El Niño with the latest Niño-1+2 weekly anomaly at +2.1C and NOAA confirming coupled atmosphere-ocean El Niño conditions are established. The ECMWF C3S June forecast has 75% of ensemble members exceeding 2.5C amplitude in the Niño-3.4 index by November; NOAA places the probability of a very strong El Niño during November-January at 63%, which would rank among the largest events in the historical record. El Niño's European winter teleconnection, broadly warmer and wetter for NW Europe in strong events, is the relevant downstream implication for the October-to-March horizon. The QBO at minus-1.5 m/s sits in weak easterly phase. Via the Holton-Tan mechanism, easterly QBO tends to weaken the polar stratospheric vortex through the autumn-to-winter transition, increasing the likelihood of sudden stratospheric warming events and favoring negative NAO phases. This is a background factor that reinforces El Niño's mild-winter signal for NW Europe but works through a different pathway, and both factors are probabilistic, not deterministic. The MJO is currently weak at Phase 3, amplitude 0.3. There is no coherent tropical intraseasonal forcing active on the 10-15 day timescale. Week-2 European weather is driven by extratropical dynamics alone. The EC46 ensemble weeks 3-6 for European cities show steadily widening uncertainty while generally remaining on the warm side of climatology. Frankfurt week 3 averages 23.1C with a spread of 18.5-28.3C, nearly 10C across the ensemble. London week 3 averages 20.3C [17.0-24.4C]. Beyond week 2, the extended range is informative on the background regime but not operationally useful at temperature-point resolution. The general signal for weeks 3-6 is continued above-normal temperatures for NW and central Europe, consistent with the El Niño background and positive AO tendency, but with uncertainty wide enough that any specific week-3 or week-4 temperature target carries limited confidence. 5. The US frontal timing is well-supported across models. The East Asian tropical signal is preliminary. Extended range (weeks 3-6) is informative for the background seasonal state but not tradeable at point resolution.
