00Z vs 12Z: What Shifted
The dominant revision in the 00Z run is a multi-city cooling of day-6 through day-8 temperatures across central and northwest continental Europe. Frankfurt's maximum on July 8 drops 5.6°C from yesterday's 12Z run, now printing 23.5°C. Paris July 8 is down 4.0°C to a maximum of 28.4°C. Amsterdam July 7 and 8 are revised 3.7–3.9°C cooler, to 20.9°C and 21.0°C respectively. London July 7 is also down 3.6°C, to a maximum of 26.5°C.
These are not marginal adjustments. A 4–6°C revision to a maximum temperature seven days out represents a meaningful shift in the early-July demand picture for northwest European gas and power markets.
The timing and geography suggest a trough system tracking into the North Sea/German Bight region around July 7–8, bringing a short cool, wet period. Frankfurt's day-by-day sequence makes this explicit: Monday July 6 reaches 23.0°C with CDD of 1.0, then Tuesday July 7 slumps to 17.4°C with 6.3mm of rain, followed by Wednesday July 8 at 16.0°C. Paris follows a similar pattern, peaking at 24.9°C Monday before dropping to 21.0°C Tuesday and 19.3°C Wednesday.
London's behaviour is notably different and worth tracking as a cross-check. The 00Z shows London warming through the end of next week: Monday 23.4°C, Tuesday 22.9°C, Wednesday 24.6°C. The UK appears to be sitting on the warm, eastern side of the trough axis while the trough itself passes through the Low Countries and Germany. That is a pattern marker: southwest-to-northeast trough orientation, warm sector pushing into Britain while cloud and rain dig into Benelux and northern Germany. If this orientation holds, British gas demand stays suppressed while continental demand gets a brief uplift from heating load.
New York is running hot in the immediate term, Thursday 33.0°C, Friday 34.0°C with CDDs of 11.0 and 12.0, before a sharp reversal arrives Saturday through Monday. Saturday drops to 31.5°C with rain, Sunday to 26.8°C, and Monday to 22.1°C. That sequence looks like a frontal passage with genuine cooling, not a brief overnight dip.
Run-to-Run Momentum
The continental European cooling for July 7–10 is now a trend across multiple consecutive model runs, not a single-run spike. The EC46 ensemble from earlier this week showed the same pattern; the 00Z ECMWF and Open-Meteo runs are reinforcing it. The direction has been consistent: each successive run has been nudging the trough arrival slightly earlier and the temperature impact slightly deeper. That momentum makes the July 7–8 cool period a high-confidence feature of the NW European forecast for the coming week.
What the models are NOT converging on is the duration. The ECMWF ensemble anomaly probabilities for day 10 still show a strongly warm bias for Frankfurt, 89% probability of above-1-standard-deviation warmth, with 72% above 1.5 standard deviations. Paris day 10 shows 79% warm bias and 70% at >1.5 standard deviations. These ensemble signals imply the trough passage is a transient event, with warmth rebuilding by the middle of next week. The EC46 six-week outlook also shows Frankfurt and Paris reverting toward 22–23°C means by weeks three through six, consistent with a brief cool interruption rather than a pattern shift.
Amsterdam and London at day 10 show more spread. Amsterdam's warm probability is 68% (>1sd) and 49% at >1.5 standard deviations, still warm-biased but with genuine ensemble uncertainty. London at day 10 is 56% warm-biased, the lowest confidence in the dataset. The divergence between Frankfurt/Paris conviction and Amsterdam/London uncertainty reflects the trough's uncertain exit path after July 8.
Bottom Line
The 00Z confirms and deepens the cooling revision for northern continental Europe July 7–8 that has been building across recent runs, this is now a feature of the forecast rather than noise. Frankfurt and Berlin trading desks should price a brief demand uplift from cooling-driven gas use around those two days, but not a sustained cold spell: the ensemble overwhelmingly reloads to above-normal temperatures by day 10. London diverges, staying warm while the trough hits the continent. Watch the 12Z run today for any further eastward shift in the trough axis, if the trough tracks more slowly into Germany, the cool period could extend into July 9 and become more relevant for Wednesday gas flows and storage injection pace.
