Seasonal Weather Outlook, Wednesday, 1 July 2026 A strengthening El Niño event, with 63% odds of record amplitude by November, is setting the energy demand trajectory for Q3 and Q4, with near-term European heat amplifying summer gas demand while the longer arc shifts risk toward a milder-than-normal winter in western Europe. ENSO & Teleconnections El Niño conditions have firmly arrived. NOAA's latest ENSO Diagnostic Discussion puts the weekly Niño-3.4 index at +2.1°C as of 24 June 2026, with the easternmost Niño-1+2 region already at +2.1°C, the Pacific's eastern lobe has led this development. NOAA's North American Multi-Model Ensemble forecasts the event to intensify through the Northern Hemisphere winter 2026-27, with the CPC consolidation median reaching +1.9°C in the November-December-January period. More striking: NOAA assigns a 63% probability of a very strong El Niño during November-January, which would rank among the largest events in the record since 1950. ECMWF's C3S June update is equally unambiguous, 75% of grand ensemble members exceed 2.5°C Niño-3.4 amplitude by November, and ECMWF explicitly notes that models producing lower amplitudes have historically underestimated the event. The supporting teleconnection picture reinforces an active ENSO signal. The QBO sits in easterly phase at -1.5 m/s at 50hPa, by the Holton-Tan mechanism, this combination with El Niño tends to favour a weaker polar vortex and heightened blocking risk over the North Atlantic-European sector from midwinter. The NAO is currently neutral at -0.31, with the GEFS 16-day ensemble showing a slight negative tendency through early July before modest positive recovery. AO is near neutral (+0.30) but GEFS members build AO positively through mid-July, which in the near term supports a westerly-dominated Atlantic regime for northwest Europe, limiting blocking risk through the next two weeks. MJO remains weak at Phase 5 amplitude 0.4, exerting minimal teleconnection forcing for now. The strongly negative PDO (-9.90) reinforces the El Niño signal for US West Coast temperature outcomes. 6-Week Temperature Trajectory The EC46 ensemble's latest run (1 July) shows a material upward revision to the European near-term outlook. Frankfurt has been shifted +5.2°C warmer for 6 July, now reaching 29.0°C; Paris moves +4.0°C to 32.6°C for the same day. Amsterdam on 6 July gains +3.2°C. These are large single-day revisions and flag a rapid-onset heat episode developing across northwest continental Europe in the first week of July. The ensemble confidence is highest in week 2: Frankfurt at 25.2°C (range 20.8-29.7°C) and Paris at 26.3°C (range 22.3-30.2°C) show notably wide spreads, reflecting uncertainty around whether the heat pulse is sustained or quickly relieved by Atlantic advection. The ECMWF probabilistic data quantifies this tilt: Amsterdam carries 38.8% warm_1sd probability and 20.9% warm_2sd probability, against near-zero cold_1.5sd probability. Frankfurt is less extreme but still skewed warm (30.9% warm_1sd, 11.9% warm_2sd). Beyond week 2, the ensemble shows a correction. Amsterdam cools by 3.3-3.4°C in weeks 3-4 relative to the warm peak, and the temperature trajectory for northwest Europe flattens out to near-normal levels through weeks 5-6. Madrid is more consistently warm throughout the period (29-30°C), reflecting a durable Iberian heat dome that is a climatological feature of El Niño summers. Houston remains at 29-30°C, consistent with NOAA's seasonal expectation of above-normal temperatures across the southern US through JAS. Japan's EC46 trajectory shows Nagoya and Osaka both rising to 26-27°C by week 2-3 and sustaining that through week 6, a hotter-than-seasonal outlook that underpins LNG cooling demand in Japan through the summer injection season. Regional Seasonal Outlooks For Europe, the operative seasonal message is a warm Q3 giving way to uncertain Q4. The ECMWF C3S grand ensemble and NOAA CPC both tilt above-normal for European temperatures through the summer, consistent with the El Niño development and positive SST anomalies in the North Atlantic. DWD's seasonal outlook has shown near-normal autumn signals for central Europe, modestly diverging from ECMWF's slightly warmer tilt, the two models disagree by roughly half a standard deviation for OND 2026. That divergence is itself informative: it captures the genuine uncertainty about whether the autumn circulation remains Atlantic-driven or sees early continental blocking. In East Asia, JMA's summer outlook for Japan is for above-normal temperatures, the monsoon front is progressing, and Japan's air-conditioning-driven power and LNG demand peak typically runs through August. The EC46 data supports this with sustained 26-27°C weekly means for Nagoya and Osaka through late July. Korea and China face similar summer heat risk, consistent with El Niño's typical amplification of western Pacific heat. For the Americas, NOAA CPC's JAS outlook favours above-normal temperatures for the Pacific Northwest and Southeast US, with below-normal precipitation for the Southern Plains and Lower Mississippi Valley. The latter raises US summer gas demand from power burn, ERCOT in particular operates in conditions consistent with elevated above-normal-temperatures probability through August. Brazil hydro inflows face reduced risk of blocking through the Southern Hemisphere's mild winter, but the dry season outlook for the Centre-South region warrants monitoring for Q4 hydro reservoir recovery. Hydro & Storage EU gas storage data in the packet is not available at publication, but the directional context is that European storage has been rebuilding through Q2 after the Hormuz disruption that drove TTF to multi-year highs earlier in 2026. The GECF head indicated at the Reuters Energy Forum that market rebalancing was expected in Q3 as Qatar restores LNG output, with full normalisation of flows by Q4. That supply recovery, combined with a warmer European Q3 reducing heating demand, creates a net bearish structural backdrop for TTF Cal+1 if storage refilling proceeds without disruption. Nordic hydro reservoir levels are not updated in current data, but the positive AO and westerly-dominant July pattern for northwest Europe supports above-average precipitation risk for Scandinavia over the next two weeks, a net bearish signal for Nordic power and therefore French interconnector demand. Strategic Positioning - TTF Cal+1 (€34.85): The developing very-strong El Niño is a net bearish signal for European gas winter demand, historically associated with milder-than-normal temperatures in NW Europe during NDJ. The current forward curve does not fully reflect this risk. - German and Dutch summer power: The week-1 European heat pulse (Frankfurt +5.2°C revision) supports gas burn for power in the near term, underpinning TTF prompt. Watch German Power Q+1 at €113.24 for a reaction to the heat episode duration signal. - LNG JKM (currently $16.05): Japan summer heat trajectory through weeks 2-6 on EC46 supports elevated Japan LNG demand. If Qatar restoration of supply is front-loaded in July as the prime minister indicated, the supply-side relief may cap JKM even with robust demand. - US gas (Henry Hub, $3.24): NOAA's above-normal temperature forecast for the US Southeast and East Coast through JAS, combined with below-normal precipitation for the Southern Plains, supports elevated power burn demand. The Henry Hub prompt should find support while these conditions hold. - Iberian renewables / Spanish power (€108/MWh DA): The persistent Iberian heat dome on EC46 suppresses wind generation for Spain and Portugal through July while increasing cooling demand, a structurally tight combination for Spanish and Portuguese power through summer. - Brazil hydro/power: Monitor Southern Hemisphere winter precipitation for the Centre-South reservoirs, El Niño's typical drying influence on southern Brazil creates downside risk to hydro availability entering Q4, relevant for Brazilian LNG import demand.
