ENSO & Teleconnections El Niño conditions are no longer emerging: they are present. The weekly Niño-3.4 index stood at +1.9°C on 17 June, with the easternmost Niño-1+2 region running at +2.1°C, a pattern indicating the anomaly is rooted in the eastern Pacific, characteristic of the most disruptive event types. NOAA's NMME multi-model mean projects the relative Niño-3.4 index exceeding +2.0°C by October-November-December 2026. C3S's June bulletin is blunter: 75% of grand ensemble members breach 2.5°C amplitude by November, with statistical corrections suggesting models with the lowest amplitude are systematically underestimating the event. NOAA assigns a 40% chance El Niño reaches "strong" by July-August-September, rising to a 63% probability of a very strong event during November-January. Copernicus goes further, noting that half the C3S grand ensemble approaches or exceeds the largest relative Niño-3.4 value observed since 1970. The surrounding teleconnection picture is transitional. The NAO stands at -0.31, broadly neutral, while the AO is a mild +0.30. GEFS 16-day forecasts show the NAO oscillating between -0.12 and +0.15 through mid-July, no sustained blocking pattern, no strong westerly reinforcement. The AO trajectory is more dynamic: after a modest start, members converge toward +1.54 to +1.89 by days 12-14, implying a strengthening polar vortex through July. That is a short-range warm signal for Europe. The QBO at 50 hPa reads -1.5 m/s, firmly in easterly phase. Under the Holton-Tan mechanism, an easterly QBO tends to weaken the stratospheric polar vortex on a seasonal timescale, raising the probability of sudden stratospheric warming events this autumn and winter. Combined with a strong El Niño, which itself tends to tighten the vortex on average, the net winter circulation outcome is genuinely contested. The two signals pull in opposite directions. Traders pricing European gas winter spreads should weight both scenarios, not simply rely on the El Niño-warm baseline. 6-Week Temperature Trajectory The EC46 ensemble shows the clearest near-term signal for northwest Europe: a notable warm pulse in weeks two and three, with wide spread indicating low confidence in the exact amplitude. Frankfurt's mean rises from 22.2°C in week one to 24.3°C in weeks two and three, with the upper ensemble reaching 29.3°C, nearly a ten-degree range. London hits 23.7°C in week two, though the spread (19.8-27.4°C) is similarly wide. Paris follows the same pattern, with the week-two mean at 26.6°C but a range from 22.3°C to 30.9°C. Compared to yesterday's run, EC46 has shifted materially warmer for early July: London gains +2.5°C for 9-10 July, Frankfurt picks up +2.3°C for early August, and Madrid gains +2.2-2.5°C across 3-5 July. These are significant single-run revisions suggesting ensemble convergence toward a warmer European summer, but the spread remains too wide for high-confidence positioning beyond week two. The Iberian picture is steadier. Madrid sits in a 28.4-29.6°C range throughout the six-week window with narrower spread, implying summer heat as a reliable driver for Iberian power demand. Houston remains persistently hot at 29-30°C with low variance, US gas burn continues uninterrupted. For the Southern Hemisphere, São Paulo's August profile has shifted sharply in the latest EC46 run (+2.7-3.1°C warmer), now printing 25-26°C through mid-August, a warm anomaly in Southern Hemisphere winter that reduces heating demand and supports hydro inflows via convective activity. Regional Seasonal Outlooks For Europe, C3S and ECMWF seasonal products align on the summer direction: warmer than normal. The EC46 six-week data provides the most granular current steer. In East Asia, Nagoya and Osaka warm steadily to 26-27°C by weeks three through six as Japan enters peak summer. JMA's El Niño outlook historically flags elevated probability of above-average temperatures across Japan, Korea and northern China during El Niño summers, and warmer JAS temperatures in Japan typically drive strong cooling-load LNG demand. That signal is building now. India's monsoon is running against a dry-year El Niño signal. Above-average Indian Ocean SSTs may partially counteract the canonical El Niño monsoon suppression, but a weakened monsoon would reduce hydro generation across South and Southeast Asia, amplifying LNG and coal demand for power. For the Americas, NOAA's JAS outlook assigns above-normal temperatures for most of the western CONUS with the highest probabilities in the Pacific Northwest. Brazil's hydro situation looks constructive: the São Paulo warm EC46 anomaly in austral winter suggests reduced cold air outbreaks, which historically supports above-normal tropical convection and positive reservoir inflows, a bearish signal for Brazilian gas-to-power substitution in Q3. Hydro & Storage EU gas storage is tracking comfortably above the five-year average heading into July, providing a seasonal buffer. The injection season has three to four months to run. A warm European summer suppresses heating demand but drives cooling load; net storage trajectory depends more on wind generation and cross-border balancing than temperature alone at this stage. Nordic reservoir levels remain the swing factor for Q4 European power. The EC46 outlook for Oslo staying near 16-17°C with wide spread leaves open the possibility of a warm and dry Scandinavian summer, which would reduce hydro inflows and pressure Q4 Nordic power curves higher. Strategic Positioning - TTF Cal 27 winter risk is wider than the market may price: Easterly QBO plus a very strong El Niño creates contested winter circulation signals. Neither the cold-vortex-breakdown scenario nor the warm El Niño baseline can be dismissed. The risk distribution heading into NHW 2026-27 is atypically wide. - European power July upside: EC46's warm pulse in weeks 2-3, amplified by yesterday's run shift, points to possible elevated cooling load. Front-month German base and NBP gas for July carry upside risk if the warm ensemble members verify. - JKM through autumn 2026: El Niño summers in Japan tend to drive above-normal cooling demand. A Niño-3.4 index tracking toward +2.0°C by OND supports firm JKM demand through the autumn injection-to-withdrawal transition. The JKM-TTF spread warrants monitoring as both markets absorb the same El Niño signal from different angles. - Brazil Q3 gas substitution lower: São Paulo's warm EC46 revisions and El Niño hydrology favour better inflows and lower gas burn through Q3, bearish for domestic LNG import volumes. - US gas burn sustained: Houston's persistent 29-30°C EC46 profile through August points to sustained ERCOT cooling load and above-normal gas-to-power demand. Henry Hub Q3 2026 demand assumptions look supported from a temperature standpoint. - Nordic Q4 power: Watch precipitation and reservoir data through July and August. A warm, dry summer amplifies the risk of a Q4 Nordic squeeze that historically reprices UK and NW European power sharply into autumn.
