Seasonal Weather Outlook, Saturday, 27 June 2026 A building El Niño of potentially historic amplitude is the dominant strategic signal for winter 2026-27 gas and LNG markets, with 75% of the C3S grand ensemble now projecting peak Niño3.4 anomalies above +2.5°C, territory that would rank among the strongest events recorded since 1950. ENSO and Teleconnections El Niño conditions are now present and accelerating. The weekly Niño3.4 index reached +1.9°C on 17 June, with the easternmost Niño-1+2 region already at +2.1°C, a signature that favours rapid coupling of the ocean-atmosphere system into northern hemisphere autumn. NOAA's June diagnostic puts a 63% probability on very strong El Niño conditions during November-January. The ECMWF C3S update released 26 June goes further: half the grand ensemble members are now tracking close to or above the largest relative Niño3.4 value observed since 1970. The QBO at 50hPa is running at -1.5 m/s, easterly phase. Per Holton-Tan dynamics, an easterly QBO increases the odds of a weakened polar vortex in the northern hemisphere winter, which in turn raises the probability of sudden stratospheric warming events and negative-NAO blocking. This is a countervailing force to the El Niño warmth signal and creates genuine uncertainty over the European winter outlook. Models cannot yet resolve whether these two signals constructively interfere, but the combination justifies holding wider winter gas spreads than the surface El Niño story alone would suggest. The NAO is currently neutral at -0.31 and the AO at +0.30, both inside the noise band. The 16-day GEFS AO forecast shows a notable positive swing building from day five onward, reaching +1.54 to +1.89 in the final few days of the outlook window, a regime that suppresses blocking and keeps the Atlantic storm track active across northern Europe through early July. MJO is in Phase 6 at amplitude 0.7, too weak to be a primary driver but consistent with modest suppression over the Maritime Continent and slightly enhanced convection over the central Pacific, which reinforces the developing El Niño SST pattern. Six-Week Temperature Trajectory The EC46 ensemble is warmer for northwest Europe at nearly every lead time relative to yesterday's run, with Frankfurt gaining +2.4°C on 1 July and the mid-July dates (13–23 July) revised up by +2.1–2.4°C. The week-2 trough, Frankfurt 19.6°C with a spread of 15.7–24.3°C, remains the widest uncertainty window in the outlook, reflecting competing scenarios around a potential Atlantic trough passage. By weeks three through six, Frankfurt stabilises in the 21–23°C range (spread narrowing to roughly ±4.5°C) as the ensemble converges on a persistently warm but not extreme European summer. Amsterdam and London follow a similar profile: firm warmth in week one (21.2°C and 20.9°C respectively), a mid-range dip and spread-widening in week two, then a return to near-normal or slightly above-normal levels through week six. Madrid stands out: the ensemble is warmer every week through the outlook period, reaching 29.6°C by week five (spread 26.5–32.0°C), Iberian summer heat is becoming entrenched. In Asia, the Nagoya and Osaka trajectories show a sustained warming arc from 22–23°C in week one to 26–27°C by weeks three through six, consistent with the seasonal arrival of peak summer heat and the post-tsuyu pattern. The Seoul EC46 revision of +2.7°C for 4 July flags the potential for an early onset of North Asian heat loading, relevant for Korean power demand and LNG spot imports. Regional Seasonal Outlooks For Europe, the weight of seasonal evidence points to near-normal to above-normal temperatures through autumn. ECMWF's probabilistic output for Amsterdam shows cold-1.5SD probability at 5.9% average and warm-1.5SD at 4.9%, near-symmetric, with no strong signal. Frankfurt tilts marginally cold in the ensemble tails (cold-1SD at 17.7% versus warm-1SD at 12.9%), which appears to reflect internal variability rather than a forced response. DWD has issued a near-normal summer and autumn forecast for central Europe; this aligns broadly with the ECMWF seasonal output. The key risk to that consensus is the QBO-vortex pathway: if a stratospheric warming event materialises in November or December, European winter temperatures could deviate sharply from the El Niño warmth signal. In East Asia, JMA's 3-month outlook has issued above-normal temperature probabilities across Honshu for JAS 2026. Combined with the El Niño forcing, this is bearish for winter JKM demand in Japan. Korea's KMA is signalling similar above-normal signals for summer and extending cautiously into early autumn. Neither agency has committed on winter, but the consensus from NMME and C3S multi-model runs supports continued warmth through autumn, which structurally reduces the urgency of aggressive winter LNG contracting by JERA, KOGAS, and CNOOC. NOAA CPC's June seasonal outlook favours above-normal temperatures across much of the eastern US for JAS, with elevated probabilities along the New England coast. The 8-14 day outlook anticipates a widespread heat wave across the central and eastern CONUS, directionally consistent with near-term Henry Hub support. For Brazil, El Niño typically associates with reduced precipitation across southern and southeastern Brazil (the hydro catchments feeding São Paulo and Minas Gerais). The Sao Paulo EC46 revision of +2.4°C for early August is noted; if the current dry bias extends through the austral winter, the hydro reservoir situation for Q4 could tighten, raising Brazilian LNG import demand. This is a risk to monitor rather than a confirmed signal. India's monsoon onset arrived close to normal timing in June, but the El Niño setup raises the probability of below-normal cumulative rainfall over central and northwestern India through July and August, the key demand-generation states. Suppressed monsoon rainfall historically drives higher industrial and agricultural power consumption, increasing gas burn at Indian combined-cycle plants. Strategic Positioning - Cal+1 European gas (TTF Winter 2026-27): El Niño points structurally bearish for continental demand. The QBO easterly phase is the primary upside risk, monitor for polar vortex disruption signals in September-October as a trigger for reassessing winter length. - JKM October-March strip: JMA and CMA alignment on above-normal temperatures for Japan and Korea through autumn reduces the near-term prompt squeeze risk. Below-consensus buying from major North Asian importers likely to persist into late summer. - Henry Hub near-term: NOAA favours sustained heat across the eastern US into mid-July. The 8-14 day guidance calls a broad heat wave. This is the one region where El Niño adds a near-term bullish charge via power-burn demand. - Brazilian LNG spot: Watch Q3 hydro reservoir data. An El Niño-driven dry season could shift Brazil from marginal to active LNG buyer by September, adding to global spot competition. - Nordic power (ENOYR+1): El Niño typically associated with above-normal Scandinavian temperatures, limiting Nordic hydro drawdown risk in autumn. Bearish signal for winter premium in Nordic power curves. - EU gas storage: Current trajectory above 5-year average; El Niño warmth through autumn extends the injection window. The buffer builds further before the critical October-November withdrawal season, cap any structural gas rally without a vortex disruption catalyst.
