Weather Daybreak Update, Thursday, June 25, 2026
The 00Z ECMWF confirms last night's 12Z cooling signal for northwest Europe with no meaningful reversal, while nudging the post-warmth trough slightly colder at day 10. The US warming for early July has held its ground across consecutive runs.
00Z vs 12Z: What Shifted
The headline shift is a persistent multi-run cooling signal for Germany and France in the day 4-6 window. Frankfurt's June 30 maximum has been revised down 3.6°C to 26.9°C, with yesterday's 12Z having already moved in the same direction. Paris June 29 is down another 3.4°C to 26.2°C. This is not a single-run outlier, both cities have seen downward revisions on consecutive runs, consistent with models progressively deepening a trough positioned over the North Sea by the weekend.
Through the heatwave window itself (today through Saturday), the data is unchanged. Frankfurt hits 29.6°C Thursday, 31.2°C Friday, 32.3°C Saturday. Amsterdam peaks at 30.6°C Saturday. Paris is already at 33.7°C today before cooling to 24.4°C by Sunday. London tops out at 30.0°C Friday. The warmth is real and imminent; the 00Z is adjusting the landing, not the peak.
The ECMWF ensemble anomaly probabilities at day 10 have shifted toward a cold bias: Frankfurt carries a 48% probability of exceeding 1 standard deviation cold, with 24% probability of exceeding 1.5 standard deviations. Amsterdam sits at 38% cold probability, London at 31%. Yesterday's 12Z already had this tendency, the 00Z is reinforcing rather than reversing it. The ECMWF IFS week-two mean for Frankfurt falls to 15.5°C, and for Paris to 16.6°C. The EC46 week-two means are in the same ballpark: Frankfurt 20.9°C, Paris 22.2°C, a 5°C step-down from week one.
The notable upward revision is in the US. New York July 5 is up 3.4°C to a maximum of 33.5°C. This reinforces what the 12Z was already showing and confirms the early-July US heat signal is becoming consensus. The 00Z has now moved in the same direction as the 12Z for two consecutive runs, the warm eastern US pattern for the July 4 week is converging.
Wind changes for central Europe are modest. Frankfurt June 28 peak wind was revised up 4.4 km/h to 16.9 km/h, consistent with a passing frontal zone embedded in the trough. Amsterdam June 30 peak wind was revised down 5.3 km/h to 14.8 km/h, suggesting the post-frontal flow is calming rather than sustained.
In Japan, the 00Z revised Tokyo and Osaka June 26 peak winds sharply higher, Tokyo up 8.8 km/h to 32.6 km/h, Osaka up 6.0 km/h to 23.0 km/h, Nagoya up 5.1 km/h to 24.7 km/h. This appears to be a short-lived frontal feature or strengthening monsoon flow; it does not materially alter the temperature trajectory, which continues to show Nagoya warming from 22.2°C this week to 26.8-26.9°C in weeks three through six on the EC46.
Run-to-Run Momentum
For northwest Europe, this is the third or fourth consecutive run reinforcing the same narrative: a strong heatwave peaks Thursday-Saturday, a trough undercuts it sharply from Sunday onward, and models are converging on a genuinely cold week-two for Germany and France, below climatology, not just moderated. The directional message from 12Z to 00Z is unchanged. The cold anomaly probabilities are building rather than eroding. This is a trend, not a one-run spike.
For the US eastern seaboard, two consecutive runs have confirmed warming for the July 4-6 window. That is enough to treat as the working forecast. The EC46 week-two mean for New York sits at 26.6°C with a 22.4-30.6°C spread, wide, but the mean has been revised upward consistently.
The wind revisions for Japan are a single-run feature and should not be extrapolated.
Bottom Line
The 00Z strengthens confidence in the European trough scenario from Sunday onward. The heatwave is delivering as advertised over the next 48-72 hours, but the post-peak correction is deeper and more consistent than where the 12Z ensemble started this week. Traders watching German baseload demand should note that Frankfurt drops from 32.3°C Saturday to 23.4°C by Monday, that is a 9°C cooling in two days once the trough arrives, materially reducing spot cooling demand. On the next 12Z run, watch whether the post-cold recovery in week two accelerates or stays suppressed: the EC46's 18.4-28.5°C range for Frankfurt in week four is too wide to be actionable, and the 12Z ensemble spread over that window will start to define whether July turns warm or stays below-normal.
