Against the previous run, the 12Z ECMWF has trimmed Frankfurt's Wednesday wind maxima by 3 km/h and extended the hot-and-calm pattern marginally further into the weekend, confirmation that the ridge is holding shape rather than eroding early.
The week-two story is where the 12Z run introduces its most material update. Oslo's day-nine wind maximum has been revised upward by 4.3 km/h in the new run, a signal that Atlantic westerlies are beginning to reassert over Scandinavia by late June. This is consistent with the sharp week-two temperature step-down in every European city, but the ensemble spread on the timing and depth of the trough arrival remains the widest uncertainty in the current forecast.
2. SYNOPTIC SETUP & FORECAST EVOLUTION
The synoptic driver through Saturday is a stubborn ridge extending from the Azores northeast across France, the Low Countries, and into the German plain. At day five, the 500-hPa anomaly field is unambiguous: Frankfurt and Amsterdam show 100% ensemble probability of exceeding one standard deviation warm, with Frankfurt at 100% probability of exceeding 1.5 standard deviations, a level of confidence that is unusual even for a summer heat event. Paris comes in at 98% for the same threshold. The spread in the day-five ensemble is essentially nil. Traders should treat the near-term thermal pattern as locked.
What matters more is the forecast evolution from day six onward. The week-one mean temperatures state the case clearly: Amsterdam week one 24.6°C, Paris 28.6°C, Frankfurt 28.2°C, all running well above seasonal norms. Then the step change: Amsterdam week two drops to 18.4°C, Paris to 22.0°C, Frankfurt to 20.8°C. That is a 6–8°C drop across the core continental demand zone within a single seven-day window.
The mechanism is an Atlantic trough developing off Iberia or the Bay of Biscay and then propagating northeast. The ensemble splits on two things: the trough's depth and its timing. Whether it undercuts the ridge fully and clears France by day eight, or arrives shallower and later, drives the wide model spread. Frankfurt's week-two range of 16.9 to 25.6°C, an 8.7°C spread, captures this disagreement quantitatively. a) NW Europe & Nordic

Nordic hydro, however, does not self-correct with this pattern. The Netherlands is the most exposed northwest European market to the week-two uncertainty. At 23.4% storage fill, the weakest in the northwest European cluster, the Dutch position compounds every day the current low-wind, high-cooling-demand pattern persists. A shallow week-two trough that holds temperatures in the 20–22°C band for another week pushes the Netherlands further below the injection curve. b) Southern & Eastern Europe

Madrid is the notable update in this run. The new model has added 2.7°C to the Madrid June-30 maximum (now 36.6°C), extending Iberian heat into the start of week two rather than seeing an early break. The Iberian heat dome acts as an anchor for the Atlantic trough's southern progression, it will resist penetration until the ridge above begins collapsing from the north. Italy at 65.3% gas storage fill sits in a structurally different demand position from northwest Europe this week. The incremental cooling demand signal from the current Mediterranean warmth is real but modest relative to the Franco-German heatwave impact on power burn and gas storage injection rates.

c) East Asia
The Japan-Korea complex shows a warming trend across the extended range consistent with seasonal monsoon progression rather than a discrete synoptic event. Tokyo week one at 22.3°C rises to 24.5°C in week two and 27.1°C in week three as the Baiu front lifts northward and the western Pacific subtropical high establishes. These revisions are modest but directionally coherent: the East Asian summer pattern is settling into the hot-and-calm regime that follows Baiu season, with reduced synoptic disruption across the industrial coastal cities. Seoul week one at 22.1°C, rising to 24.1°C in week two, reflects the same progression.
The JKM-relevant demand signal from Northeast Asia is on a strengthening trajectory heading into July and August. No tropical cyclone development is indicated in the current data, but the Pacific typhoon season is now open and the accelerating El Niño provides an increasingly energetic background for tropical development in the western Pacific through Q3.
d) Americas
The US setup is the second major energy-market signal this week. The CPC 6-10 day outlook (valid June 28–July 2) describes a stable high-latitude ridge over northern Canada with amplified shortwave troughing over the western US and ridging downstream across the eastern half. New York week two at 26.2°C [21.6–30.9°C] carries the widest spread of any city in the extended forecast, a 9.3°C range, reflecting model disagreement about whether the eastern ridge fully amplifies or whether shortwave troughs from the west disrupt it. The near-term New York picture includes significant precipitation on Saturday (43.8 mm), consistent with the shortwave troughing pattern before the ridge consolidates. Houston week one at 28.3°C, sustaining through weeks two through six at 28.5–30.1°C, confirms the Gulf Coast is firmly in its summer heat regime with no material break in the extended range. Natural gas burn for power in the South Central region is running at, or near, seasonal peaks.
e) Other
Australia is in mid-winter. Sydney at 12.2°C week one, Adelaide 10.7°C, Melbourne 9.9°C, modest heating degree day signals (Sydney accumulates 30.3 HDD over 15 days) relative to Northern Hemisphere winter heating events. Adelaide shows wind variability in the July extended range (multiple revisions of 3–4 km/h), suggesting the Southern Annular Mode is actively cycling. The Southern Hemisphere winter LNG demand signal from Australia is structurally low; the NEM heating story is minor.
India: Mumbai at 26.6°C week one places the southwest monsoon well established over the western coast. No specific monsoon penetration depth data is available in this cycle, but the timing is consistent with normal June-July advance into central India. Monsoon progress affects Indian hydro generation and LNG import demand; no anomalous signal is visible in the current data.
4. EXTENDED RANGE & REGIME (WEEKS 3–6)
The EC46 extended outlook points to a pattern where the current heat wave resolves but Europe does not flip to a cold or strongly blocked state. Weeks-three through six show above-seasonal-norm temperatures across the Franco-German axis (Frankfurt week three 21.7°C, Paris week three 22.6°C), with ranges that widen substantially, Frankfurt [17.0–26.9°C] in week three, reflecting genuine extended-range uncertainty. The week-two trough is a reset, not a cold inversion. Post-break, the storage injection trajectory should stabilise before any secondary ridge development.
The NAO forecast from GEFS oscillates near neutral through the eight-day window (-0.12 to +0.11), which does not cleanly resolve the week-two regime question. A strongly positive NAO would signal fast Atlantic westerlies and reliable above-normal wind generation post-break; a strongly negative NAO would flag blocking risk. The near-neutral GEFS mean is consistent with the wide temperature spread in week two.
The AO forecast is more directional. From +0.61 on day one, it dips briefly near neutral on day three (-0.08) then rises steadily to +1.89 on day seven and +1.68 on day eight. A rising AO, strengthening polar vortex, is associated with enhanced mid-latitude westerly flow and reduced blocking frequency. MJO at phase 7, amplitude 1.6 (active, as of June 16) places enhanced convection over the western Indian Ocean. At roughly one week elapsed since the observation, the MJO is likely approaching phase 8, which in Northern Hemisphere summer historically favours enhanced subtropical ridging over Europe in weeks three through four. This is broadly consistent with the EC46 above-normal temperature anomaly persisting through weeks three to six, and with the possibility that a second warm episode could develop after the week-two Atlantic trough clears, particularly over France and the Iberian margin.
ENSO is the dominant seasonal backdrop. NOAA has confirmed El Niño conditions onset, with the June 17 Niño-3.4 weekly reading at +1.9°C, well above the April monthly ONI of +0.5°C and accelerating rapidly. The C3S June bulletin notes 75% of grand ensemble members exceed 2.5°C Niño-3.4 amplitude by November, and CPC puts the probability of a very strong El Niño (November-January) at 63%.
