Seasonal Outlook: El Niño Strengthens Toward a Possibly Very Strong Winter as Europe's July Heat Fades Within Two Weeks
The dominant medium-term signal is a strengthening El Niño that NOAA now gives a 63% chance of reaching very strong by November-January, even as Europe's opening-of-July heat collapses back toward near-normal inside a fortnight. Summer demand stays benign; the trade is in the winter 2026-27 curve.
ENSO and Teleconnections
NOAA's CPC confirmed El Niño onset this month, with the weekly Niño-3.4 index at +0.7°C and a +0.9°C reading relative to the global tropics. The eastern Pacific is running hotter than the basin as a whole: Niño-1+2 sits at +2.1°C, a canonical, east-based flavor rather than a Modoki. The NMME and NCEP CFSv2 intensify the event through autumn, and the CPC consolidation peaks at +1.9°C in NDJ before decaying. Copernicus C3S is more aggressive: 75% of its grand-ensemble members clear +2.5°C amplitude by November, and C3S flags that its lowest-amplitude models have historically underestimated strong events. The amplitude is where agencies split, not the direction.
The Atlantic pattern is quiet for now. NAO sits at -0.31 (neutral) and the 16-day GEFS hovers either side of zero with no durable blocking signal, while the AO climbs toward +1.5 to +1.9 late in the run, a contained polar vortex and a benign summer for European demand. MJO is active in Phase 7 at amplitude 1.6, propagating toward Phase 8, consistent with the brief European ridge then breakdown the extended ensembles show. The card for later is the easterly QBO at -1.5 m/s: by Holton-Tan it tends to favor a weaker winter vortex and -NAO blocking, which pulls against the stronger-vortex tilt a strong El Niño usually brings. Those two forces work in opposition into DJF, and the resolution is the single largest swing factor for European winter heating risk. PDO remains deeply negative at -9.90, which mutes the textbook El Niño imprint over North America.
Six-Week Temperature Trajectory
Northwest Europe opens July hot and fades fast. ECMWF's 10-day regional guidance carries warm-anomaly probabilities of 68% for Amsterdam and 70% for Frankfurt, capturing week-one heat that peaks near 27.8°C in Frankfurt and 29.4°C in Paris. The EC46 ensemble then collapses temperatures from week two: Amsterdam from 24.9°C to 19.2°C, Frankfurt from 27.8°C to 21.2°C, London from 25.2°C to 19.7°C, holding high-teens to low-20s through week six. Confidence on how deep the fade runs is low; the Frankfurt week-two spread is wide at 17.3 to 25.8°C, while London is tighter at 16.4 to 23.1°C. Iberia diverges and stays hot, Madrid holding 27 to 29°C through week six with a narrowing spread, durable heat the rest of the continent loses. Japan ramps the other way with high confidence: Nagoya climbs from 21.3°C to 27.0°C and Osaka from 20.6°C to 26.6°C over the period, spreads tight. The US Gulf warms steadily, Houston from 28.3°C toward 30°C. Wind runs low through the European heat (ECMWF 2.3 m/s Amsterdam, 1.7 m/s Frankfurt), so the week-one spike lands as thermal demand up and wind generation down at once.
Regional Seasonal Outlooks
On the big call, NOAA, C3S/ECMWF, JMA and the NMME all agree El Niño strengthens. NOAA CPC's JAS outlook favors above-normal temperatures across the western CONUS (highest in the Pacific Northwest), the Lower Mississippi Valley, the Southeast and the Eastern Seaboard, with above-normal precipitation across the West and below-normal across the Southern Plains and western Great Lakes. JMA's three-month outlook leans warm for Japan, and EC46 corroborates the Honshu build. The disagreements are amplitude (C3S models split on "very strong") and Europe near-term: ECMWF's regional warm tilt for the next ten days against EC46's week-two collapse. Russia shows no fresh Roshydromet cold signal near-term; the QBO-El Niño tension is a winter watch, not a July one. For South Asia, a developing El Niño raises monsoon-suppression risk, with Mumbai flat near 26°C in EC46. NOAA notes suppressed convection over the Maritime Continent, pointing to a drier Indonesian dry season, supportive of coal output and a swing factor for Southeast Asian cooling demand. For the Americas, the developing El Niño adds Atlantic wind shear, tilting toward a quieter hurricane peak and a thinner Gulf disruption premium.
Hydro and Storage
The week-one European heat with low wind pulls gas into the power stack and slows the injection pace, but the rapid cool-down from week two restores it, leaving the storage trajectory intact unless a hotter reload arrives in late July. Cooler, wetter NW European weeks two through six are supportive for Nordic inflows; watch the reservoir refill rate against the seasonal norm. Brazil's wet-season setup favors southern and southeastern rainfall under El Niño, a slow-burn build for SE reservoirs that bears on thermal dispatch later in the year.

- TTF and EU power (German/French Cal+1): the week-one heat plus low wind is a short, sharp tightening; fade strength into the week-two cool-down rather than chase the front. The winter risk premium is the QBO-vortex call, not summer demand.

- JKM and Newcastle coal (Q4): Japan's high-confidence heat ramp and a drier Maritime Continent skew Asian LNG and thermal coal firmer into the cooling peak; watch Indonesian supply.
- Henry Hub and US power (Aug): NOAA JAS Gulf and East Coast warmth plus Houston's climb support cooling burn; the El Niño-driven shear lowers the hurricane supply-shock tail.
- Brent disruption premium: a quieter Atlantic season trims the weather risk component into Q3.
- Iberian power (Cal): persistent Madrid heat is the one durable European cooling signal; everything north of the Pyrenees normalizes by week two.
