What changed: the 12Z run trended materially hotter for the back half of this week, with Amsterdam's June 26 maximum revised up nearly 8C, London's June 25 up 5C to the mid-30s, and Frankfurt and Paris pulled in the same direction, the ridge is now both stronger and longer-lived than yesterday suggested.
2. Synoptic Setup & Forecast Evolution
The defining feature is a strong mid-level ridge amplifying over Western Europe early this week and anchoring through roughly Thursday. Heights build from Iberia northeastward, drawing a warm continental airmass over France and pushing the +1.5σ warm signal to 100% of ensemble members at day 5 for every NW European city we track. This is not a marginal warm tilt, it is a high-confidence, near-unanimous heat event for the next four to five days. Paris runs to the low-to-mid 30s by Tuesday and Wednesday, London and Amsterdam spike into the low 30s midweek, and the pressure gradient slackens to almost nothing beneath the ridge core.
The critical secondary feature is what the ridge does to the wind field. Under an amplified anticyclone the surface flow goes light and variable. The breakdown is the bullish-for-wind, bearish-for-demand pivot. As the Atlantic trough digs in from day 8, the German Bight wind regime reactivates and temperatures normalize. Scandinavia stays on the dry side of the pattern. Oslo holds in the high teens with high pressure dominating and little organized precipitation, the Nordic hydro picture sees no meaningful relief this week. The northeast Asian cities all show a clear upward temperature trajectory from week 1 into July: Tokyo climbs from the low 20s toward the high 20s by weeks 3-4, Seoul and Osaka follow the same path, and Shanghai jumps from the mid-20s in week 1 to the high 20s from week 2 onward. This is the normal early-summer warm-up and monsoon-margin progression, and it points to cooling demand ratcheting steadily higher into July, the relevant medium-term signal for Asian LNG pull. The near-term regime is a classic European summer ridge, but the teleconnection backdrop argues against it persisting. The NAO sits neutral-to-slightly-negative now and the GEFS trajectory keeps it hovering near zero before nudging positive, consistent with the Atlantic eventually reasserting and breaking the block down rather than reinforcing it. The AO is the stronger signal: it climbs decisively positive through the forecast window, trending toward +1.5 to +1.9. A strengthening positive AO favors a tighter polar vortex and a more zonal, progressive pattern, again pointing away from prolonged blocking and toward the Atlantic-driven, cooler-and-breezier regime the ensemble already hints at for week 2.
EC46 backs this up. Beyond week 1, the European anomaly washes out: Amsterdam, London and Paris all settle back toward seasonal norms in weeks 3-6, with no member consensus on a return to heat.
