Venture Global and Baker Hughes Forge LNG Alliance While $13.6 Billion Chart Acquisition Faces Scrutiny

Venture Global and Baker Hughes Forge LNG Alliance While $13.6 Billion Chart Acquisition Faces Scrutiny Strong Q2 revenues and a Qatar-driven supply crunch support the acquisition case, but a strained balance sheet limits tolerance for construction slippage. Venture Global and Baker Hughes announced a partnership on Tuesday (2026-09-15) for the next phase of U.S. LNG development, according to Insider Monkey, adding commercial momentum at a moment when Venture Global is under pressure to show that the $13.6 billion paid for Chart Industries was justified.8 The Chart acquisition loaded significant debt onto a balance sheet already stretched by multi-billion-dollar construction projects. Venture Global's stock has risen more than 124% since January 2026, pricing in near-flawless execution. But hedge fund positioning is more guarded: 51 funds tracked by Insider Monkey held VG at the end of Q2 2026 with combined stakes of roughly $747 million, against 74 funds with nearly $1.38 billion invested in Baker Hughes. The equipment supplier attracts nearly twice the institutional capital of its new partner.8 Venture Global posted $4.58 billion in Q2 2026 revenue, up 48% from Q2 2025, with LNG export volumes rising 45% over the same period, Rigzone reported on Monday (2026-08-10). In Q1 2026 the company shipped 130 cargos and sold 481 TBtu of LNG, up 67 cargos and 253 TBtu from Q1 2025, per its quarterly report filed May 12, 2026.5,2 The external environment has been unusually supportive. Iranian attacks on Qatari LNG infrastructure disabled roughly 20% of global LNG capacity, according to multiple market reports, and QatarEnergy halted production in March 2026 after strikes on operating facilities. No restart has been confirmed since.6,1 European gas inventories stood at 67% of capacity in early September (2026-09-09), the lowest pre-winter fill since 2009 against a five-year average of 84%, Blockonomi reported. ICE Endex TTF front-month gas stood at €80.08/MWh in European morning trade on Wednesday (2026-09-16); Asian JKM was at $27.76/MMBtu, quoted at 14:09 UTC that day. NYMEX Henry Hub front-month traded at $2.92/MMBtu in the same session, held down by ample domestic supply. The gap between cheap feedgas at Henry Hub and elevated destination prices underpins U.S. LNG export economics, and it has rarely been wider.7 Venture Global has been adding contracted volume to lock in that spread. On Thursday (2026-06-18) the company executed binding supply agreements with Germany's EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg for approximately 0.82 MMtpa of U.S. LNG over five years beginning in 2026. The deal supplements an existing 2 MTPA, 20-year sales and purchase agreement between the two companies, providing visible contracted cash flow alongside the expansion program.2,3 Venture Global and Cheniere Energy have helped fill part of the Qatari supply gap, The Globe and Mail reported. Opportunistic cargo sales have boosted near-term revenue. But the long-term argument for a $13.6 billion acquisition rests on scale, not on spot volumes driven by a supply shock.4 The CP2 project, still under construction, holds permits to export 28 MMtpa — approximately 1.45 trillion cubic feet of gas equivalent annually — to FTA and non-FTA countries, Rigzone reported. Venture Global has guided for 347 to 369 cargos from the Plaquemines project in full-year 2026. Hitting those targets would demonstrate the operational pace needed to underpin the acquisition price.2 The test is CP2 construction pace and quarterly Plaquemines cargo counts against that guidance. European inventories sit 17 percentage points below their five-year average with no Qatar restart confirmed, giving U.S. exporters pricing support for now. A prolonged construction delay would put the Chart acquisition cost on a balance sheet with already limited flexibility.8,7,6
