India Locks In Australian Uranium as Nuclear Fuel Competition Intensifies The July agreement operationalises a decade-old supply framework, giving New Delhi a direct source of raw uranium for its 100 GW capacity target. The numbers reveal how thin the buffer between nuclear ambition and fuel availability has become, and why India's move to secure its own long-term supply carries real market weight.6 India and Australia operationalised their civil nuclear cooperation agreement on Thursday (2026-07-09), when Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese finalised administrative arrangements at the 3rd India-Australia Annual Summit in Melbourne. The deal ends a decade of delay over nuclear safeguards and non-proliferation concerns, and clears the path for commercial uranium exports from Canberra to New Delhi for exclusively peaceful purposes.1,3,4 Australia is the natural partner for that role. The country holds the world's largest identified recoverable uranium reserves, estimated at between 28% and 33% of global resources by CNBCTV18, and exports all of its output since it operates no domestic nuclear plants.4 But adding India introduces a customer whose needs will grow for decades. India currently runs 24 reactors at seven sites with combined installed capacity of 8,780 MW, and nuclear power contributes about 3% of the country's electricity generation, CNBCTV18 reported.4 The gap between that output and India's electricity demand, driven by a population of 1.4 billion, is the central problem the 100 GW target is meant to address. New Delhi wants to reach 100 GW of nuclear capacity by 2047, which would be enough to supply roughly 60 million homes annually.2,4 Getting there requires sustained construction. Reactors now underway, a mix of Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors and Light Water Reactors, are expected to lift capacity to around 22 GW by 2031-32, CNBCTV18 reported.4 That near-term pipeline still leaves the vast majority of the 100 GW target as projects that have not been sanctioned or built. Earlier in 2026, the 500 MWe Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor at Kalpakkam in Tamil Nadu achieved first criticality, marking a milestone in the second phase of India's three-stage nuclear programme, according to CNBCTV18.4 The breeder programme is designed to reduce long-run dependence on imported uranium by eventually using thorium, but that transition is measured in decades. In the near term, India needs conventional uranium, and Australia has it. The non-proliferation question required a specific resolution. India is not a signatory to the NPT, which historically complicated uranium exports from countries with strict safeguards policies. Firstpost reported that the breakthrough rests on a safeguards arrangement specific to India, one that satisfied Canberra's conditions on civilian use without requiring full NPT membership.5 Civil nuclear safeguards had been Australia's stated condition for operationalising the framework; those concerns are now formally addressed. Russia's position in India's nuclear supply chain adds another dimension. Moscow has supplied enrichment services and reactor technology to New Delhi for years. Geopolitical pressure has created uncertainty over how durable that arrangement will remain. The Australian deal does not immediately displace Russian involvement, but it gives India an independent source of raw feed material. The Global X Uranium ETF (URA) traded at $42.19, down 0.50%, on Tuesday (2026-09-15). Miners and traders are still waiting for formal offtake agreements tied to the July (2026-07-09) arrangement, and until India's reactor construction schedule translates into signed contracts, the deal remains a political milestone rather than a procurement signal. Whether the 22 GW interim target by 2031-32 drives meaningful forward buying, or slips as prior Indian nuclear timelines have, is the number to track.6,4
