EIA Data Show Record Canadian Imports Pinning New England Gas to Historic Henry Hub Discount
S&P Global Energy data show Canadian pipeline inflows running at more than twice last year's pace, pushing Algonquin City Gate prices to record discounts as NYMEX Henry Hub holds near $2.89.
The NYMEX Henry Hub front-month contract edged up just over 1% to $2.89 per MMBtu in early trading on Monday (2026-09-14), but an EIA analysis published on Wednesday (2026-09-09) makes clear the conditions driving persistent price suppression have not eased. Natural gas prices at the Algonquin City Gate hub in New England have been trading near record discounts to Henry Hub in recent months, with low-cost Appalachian and Canadian supply combining with weaker regional consumption to push prices at that regional benchmark to historic lows.6
The scale of Canadian inflows stands out. S&P Global Energy data show that monthly net flows of natural gas from Canada into New England averaged a record 0.4 billion cubic feet per day from April through July 2026, more than two and a half times the volume recorded during the same four months of 2025. Appalachia added further weight: the region accounted for 31% of all U.S. marketed natural gas production in 2025, the largest single-region share in the country.6
Demand has not cleared the surplus. Total natural gas consumption across New England from April through July 2026 ran 5% below the comparable period in 2025, S&P Global Energy data show. Gas-fired electricity generation fell by 1.1 billion kilowatt-hours, a 6% decline against the same stretch of 2025, according to EIA's Hourly Electricity Grid Monitor. Wind output rose 59% and utility-scale solar 29% over the same period, reducing the call on gas-fired generation.6
New England's price dynamics have their own regional quirks, but the national storage picture reinforces them. U.S. working natural gas inventories stood 6% above the five-year average at end-June, and the EIA's July Short-Term Energy Outlook projected stocks reaching 3,966 Bcf by end of October — a build pace that, if sustained, sends the U.S. into winter with a comfortable cushion and limits near-term upside for prices.5
Weather has not provided the demand shock bulls needed. In a report sent to Rigzone on Tuesday (2026-07-14), Eli Rubin of EBW Analytics Group said milder conditions were undermining near-term gas fundamentals, with that softness already reflected in the August contract at that point. Nothing in the current data suggests conditions since July have reversed that picture.5
Wood Mackenzie offered a longer-dated counterargument in July. The firm warned that near-zero marginal cost supply will account for less than 20% of U.S. production within ten years, meaning prices will need to go higher to attract new molecules. But Wood Mackenzie also noted that Henry Hub remains a localised benchmark shaped by supply, demand, and infrastructure conditions in southern Louisiana. Structural supply forecasts have limited bearing on a market currently well-stocked.3
The gap between domestic and international gas prices is wide and has persisted. After the Strait of Hormuz closed on February 28, 2026, TTF front-month futures climbed toward $14.80 per MMBtu and Asian JKM spiked sharply, with Global LNG Hub estimating roughly 20% of global LNG supply disrupted during March 2026. JKM printed $24.88 per MMBtu on Monday (2026-09-14). Henry Hub at $2.89 is barely a tenth of that. The Atlantic LNG arbitrage linking U.S. export netbacks to global benchmarks has not been sufficient to pull domestic volumes seaward in quantities large enough to tighten the U.S. balance.4,2
The trajectory of leveraged gas products reflects the same picture. In late May 2026, 247 Wall Street reported the ProShares Ultra Bloomberg Natural Gas ETF trading around $13, down 43% year-to-date and 80% over the preceding twelve months. The same product had jumped 65% in a single week during January 2026's cold snap, with the NYMEX Henry Hub front-month posting a 125% rise over four sessions. Shoulder-season supply normalization erased those gains swiftly. The ETF's five-year decline of more than 99% is a long record of what persistent oversupply does to leveraged long exposure.1
Consensus signals for Henry Hub lean mildly bullish, but bearish supply and weather readings pull with comparable force. The concrete test ahead is whether autumn heating demand, industrial load recovery, and LNG feedgas requirements can absorb inventories currently tracking well above seasonal norms. Canada's record pipeline imports into New England, still running at more than twice the year-earlier pace per the most recent S&P Global Energy data, are one of the more direct gauges of whether domestic supply conditions are actually tightening.6,5
