Britain's Grid Runs on Century-Old Technology in Conditions It Was Not Built For, Engineer Warns An engineer's warning to Montel about ageing UK grid design adds to pressure on NESO from an unresolved metering problem and repeated analyst concerns about Scotland's fragility. Britain's electricity grid runs on technology that "hasn't fundamentally changed in more than 100 years" and is being operated in ways it "wasn't necessarily designed for," an engineer told Montel in an interview published Wednesday (2026-09-02).4 The remark is short on specifics but long on implication. Britain has added more renewable capacity over the past decade than almost any comparable economy, and has done so atop transmission infrastructure that predates it by generations. NESO, the system operator, has simultaneously absorbed that buildout while accumulating a run of operational problems. Analysts and independent engineers have not been shy about cataloguing them.4,2 That criticism took a sharper form in May (2026-05-27). Independent energy consultant Kathryn Porter told Energy Voice that NESO was conducting a "dangerous" experiment managing Scotland's grid, warning of blackout risks comparable to those that brought down parts of Spain's power system the previous year. She described Scotland's grid as fragile. Her remarks drew a response from NESO, which pointed to its reliability record rather than addressing the technical specifics she raised.1 NESO cited the GB system's "outstanding track record of reliability" and pointed to a milestone in which 98.8% of electricity on the system came from zero-carbon sources. High renewable penetration is real and significant. But a record zero-carbon share and a grid operating safely through the conditions that produce it are separate claims — the 98.8% figure speaks to the first, not the second.1 Operational strain at NESO has been documented separately. By August (2026-08-05), a Montel analyst attributed a metering problem to NESO's failure to "keep up" with green generation growth. The issue involved backwards installation of 818 power meters across the network. Whether the error affected real-time dispatch data used for balancing has not been confirmed publicly.2 National Grid's investment programme is substantial. The RIIO-T3 regulatory plan proposes GBP 31 billion of investment in the transmission network through 2031, with supply chain contracts covering over GBP 28 billion of planned spending already in place. A second phase of the Electricity Transmission Partnership has added GBP 1.2 billion in reconductoring projects. Construction of the 2.2-kilometre Grain-to-Tilbury high-voltage cable tunnel under the Thames had passed the halfway point before August 24 (2026-08-24), with more than 40,000 tonnes of material excavated and over 5,100 concrete tunnel segments installed.3 That programme describes a grid that will have been upgraded by the early 2030s. It does not address whether the current grid can absorb the next five years of renewable integration without a serious event. The engineer's remarks do not say it cannot; they say the system is operating in territory its designers did not anticipate. Those are different statements. Both carry weight.4,3 Porter's warning about Scotland has not been formally withdrawn, and NESO's rebuttal rested on aggregate reliability figures rather than the specific technical dynamics she identified. The engineer's comments on Wednesday (2026-09-02) extend the same logic to the wider GB system.1,4 What NESO has not set out publicly is how it is managing system stability as conventional synchronous generation retires and inverter-based renewables fill the gap. Whether the backwards-meter error, 818 units installed incorrectly, affected the balancing data the operator uses to run the system in real time is the more immediate question.
